Are You Awake?

"My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.

I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth."

Psalm 57:7-11, NIV

Are you awake? The very fact that you are reading this would require you to be awake physically. However, my question is not of a physical nature but a spiritual one. Recently I have been challenged by this beautiful Psalm. I feel the Lord awakening me from my spiritual slumber. I have been asking Him to open my eyes to the city in which He has placed me. My family and I have been called to Boston, MA to plant a church beginning in a neighborhood called Jamaica Plain. We officially moved to the neighborhood two weeks ago.

After much prayer, the name of the church is Awaken City Church. To be "awakened" is to become "aware" of something or someone. I observed this yesterday through the eyes of my eleven year old son Tyler. We were walking in our neighborhood enjoying an art festival when an idea began in his creative mind. To understand this fully, a year ago we visited Chicago and Tyler was moved by the amount of homeless people he saw and wondered what he could do about it. As we were awakened to individuals in our town who were also homeless, he began to talk to me about creating a ministry called "Give a little bit." I won't go into all the details now, because I believe this is a God dream and we will share more as it becomes a reality. However, it reminded me again of the importance of being with the people God has called us to love and serve. I do not believe that idea would have sparked in his mind if he had not become aware of the needs in our community.

God needs us to be light in the community in which He has placed us. Join me in praying that God would awakening our hearts to see as He sees and to love as He loves.
